Top Ten Sites

This is the listing of sites that I consider the most useful for NS Research.

RailPictures.net - Lots of pictures of NS locomotives, rolling stock, and location information.

Krunk.org - Includes Norfolk Southern's New River Districts and Joe Shaw's Railroad Images

NSCorp - Norfolk Southern's Corporate Web site

Multimodalways' Norfolk Southern Archive - Has lots of NS documents including track charts and employee timetables.

NS Dash 9.com - Lots of information about the NS motive power, includes separate listings for different paint schemes. Most notable is the list of locomotives painted in the current "horse head" scheme. Personal Page of Chris R. Toth who is a reasonably well known NS rail fan and photographer.

Norfolk Southern Locomotives - Great site with 3,300 pictures of NS locomotives sorted by number and type. Also, includes steam excursions. Same photographer (name not listed) has pictures on railpictures.net.

Appalachian Railroad Modeling - Has lots of articles, pictures, and track plans all of which are focused on coal hauling operations in Appalachia.

Bing Maps - Microsoft's map site. Bird's Eye view provides excellent detail where available. Seems to have more high resolution aerial photos than Google Maps. (Summer 2009) Unfortunately road map view does not show railroads.

Google Maps - Google maps with good aerial photos, road map view includes railroads unlike Bing maps.

Microsoft's Terraserver - Covers the entire United States, great for the areas that Bing and Google maps don't cover with high resolution.
