The primary focus of the Gilmerton Tank Farm LDE is the industrial siding serving the the fuel onload or offload? (I'm not sure from the pictures). The facility can service two tank cars at a time and the siding is long enough for several more cars. A means of moving the tank cars is not evident.

Layout Design Element.

The tank farm is across US13 from the loading facility and could be modeled or skipped. The tank farm has a pier for receiving barges as well, which is part of the confusion whether it is a onload or offload facility. To the west of the tank farm is a gas turbine based power plant that provides power on high demand days and consumes lots of fuel. I have skipped this industry for the LDE, but it is important in placing the function of the tank farm.

Gilmerton, VA LDE

Prototype: NS (Old N&W Mainline)

Dimensions: 12 feet x 5 feet, 12" Grid

Scale: N

Track work: Atlas Code 55 Flex track & Fast Tracks #6 & #8 turnouts

The key elements are the onload or offload facility and the turnout providing access to the siding. The tank farm in the background solidifies the purpose of the facility and the homes add extra realism.
