Sprouse Creek Prep Plant is located in Rawl, WV near Matewan, WV. The name of the NS station is Lavoy, WV. Access to the plant is via a spur which departs the NS mainline next to the Tug Valley Country Club. The plant is adjacent to county road 49, which makes it an easy plant to photograph.

About the Plant

The Sprouse Creek Prep Plant is one of the larger operations in Southern West Virginia. The Sprouse Creek plant is operated by Rawl Sales & Processing Company of nearby Matewan, WV. It is a fairly modern facility equipped with a flood loader and capable of storing 200 empty coal cars and 200 loaded cars.

My pictures are of the loading facility. I was not able to see the actual plant from the roadside.

Pictures

This is the main loader at Sprouse Creek. it is a massive flood loader that can load a 100 ton coal car in just a few minutes. These are the clean coal storage silos. The throughput of the flood loader is much higher than the plant itself, so large silos are used to store sufficient coal for the flood loader. This is a second flood loader at Sprouse creek. It looks to be older a have less throughput based on the size of the storage bin in the middle of the building.
