Prior to 1960, the Norfolk and Western mainline spanned from Norfolk, Virginia to Columbus, Ohio. On this web site, this trackage is referred to as the Old N&W mainline. For the modern Norfolk Southern, the old N&W mainline is divided into three divisions: the Virginia Division, the Pocahontas Division, and the Ohio Division. Virginia DivisionThe Virginia division spans from Norfolk, VA to Bluefield, W. Va. It is composed of five districts: Norfolk District, Blue Ridge District, and Christiansburg District. The Norfolk District begins at Lambert's Point (Mile 0) and extends westward to Crewe, VA. There are three subs within the Norfolk District. The first, Norfolk Terminal extends from Lambert's point south and west to Gilmerton (Mile 8). The Suffolk Sub-district extends west from Gilmerton to Suffolk, where it turns Norwest and continues to Poe (near Petersburg, VA). The Alta Vista Sub-district begins at Poe and extends westward through Petersburg and Blackstone and terminates at Crewe Yard in Crewe, VA. The Blue Ridge District extends from Crewe, VA to Roanoke, VA. The Christiansburg District extends from Roanoke, VA to Bluefield, WV. Pocahontas DivisionThe Pocahontas Division starts at Bluefield and extends to Williamson, WV. Within the Pocahontas Division are three subs, Pocahontas from Bluefield to Welch, Tug River from Welch to Iaeger, and Thacker I from Iaeger to Williamson. The Kenova District starts at Williamson, WV and extends North and West to Portsmouth, OH.
