The Norfolk District extends westward from the Lambert's Point Coal Piers
(Mile 0 of the old N&W Mainline) to Crewe, VA. The District is divided into 3
sub-districts, Norfolk Terminal,
Suffolk
Sub, and Petersburg Sub.
The Norfolk Terminal is the eastern terminus of the Norfolk Southern. It starts at Lambert's point piers where the world's largest coal transloading facility, NS coal pier #6, is located. The line heads east and south from Lambert's Point to cross the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River at Bridge #5 and continues south to South Norfolk Junction; this section is the Lambert's Point Branch. At South Norfolk Junction, the Sewells Point Branch splits from the Lambert's Point Branch and uses the old Virginian mainline to head north and ultimately west to Norfolk International Terminal, a large container port. From South Norfolk the line continues south to Portlock Yard, the primary classification yard within Norfolk Terminal. From Portlock yard the line turns westward to cross the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River at Bridge #7, and on to Gilmerton (Mile #8) where the Norfolk Terminal Sub joints the Suffolk Sub. The Suffolk Sub begins at Gilmerton and travels westward through Yadkin and into the Great Dismal Swamp. Once the mainline clears the western edge of the swamp it enters Suffolk, VA. In Suffolk the Franklin Sub splits from the mainline and heads westward to Franklin, VA. A small yard is located at the junction. The mainline turns north-west and begins the 60 mile section of tangent track from Suffolk, through Windsor, Ivor, Wakefield, and into Petersburg, VA, where the Suffolk Sub ends at the Poe station and the Altavista Sub begins. The Petersburg Sub extends from Poe, through Petersburg and westward thorough Sutherland, Ford, Blackstone, Nottoway and into Crewe, Va. The Petersburg Sub terminates at Crewe Yard. The route of the Norfolk District is shown below. The modeled portions of the Norfolk District are shown in green in the map below. References: http://www.krunk.org/ns-nrv/
