Bridge #7 is a manned bascle bridge on the Norfolk Southern (old Norfolk and Western) mainline between Norfolk Virginia and Roanoke Virginia. The bridge crosses the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake, VA. The bridge is located at approximately mile marker N7, hence its name.

The bridge is normally open to allow free flow of river traffic. When a train approaches they must call the bridge operator for proceed orders.

Layout Design Element.

The Bridge #7 LDE provides both operational and scenic interest,  if the lift system is made functional. Operationally, trains would have normally red signals on the approach to the bridge. Only upon receiving permission from bridge operator (I would suggest the dispatcher also operate the bridge) will the bridge lower and green signals be received.

My Bridge #7 LDE has been compressed approximately 50%. The scene includes the automobile bridge for US13 and the plant to the east. The approach portions could be eliminated for an additional space reduction.

Prototype: NS (Old N&W Mainline)

Dimensions: 12 feet x 5 feet, 12" Grid

Scale: N

Track work: Atlas Code 55 Flex track

The key elements which capture the scene are the bridge and the operators building.  The rest of the scene add extra realism.

For more information on other nearby elements please review Gilmerton, Dominion Power, and Tank Farm pages.

Pictures

So far this is the only picture I've been able to take of the Bridge #7. It is taken from Gilmerton looking East to the bridge. Hopefully one of these days I will find a safe place to stop and get other pictures.
