The NS Research @ SDD site is my collection of research into the modern Norfolk Southern (post-Conrail merger) operations. The site focuses on two areas of NS operations, the old N&W through southern West Virginia and the old N&W and Virginian in Tidewater Virginia.
The primary operations of the NS in these areas is movement of coal from the tipples and preparation plants (prep plants) in West Virginia to the power plants along the east coast and the Lambert's Point Transloading facility in Norfolk, Virginia. Thus the focus of the Industry Research section is Mines and Power Plants.
There is also a substantial amount of research into the Locomotives and Rolling Stock of the Norfolk Southern which can be found in the Rolling Stock Research Section. The focus of this section is to document the types and quantities of equipment that the Norfolk Southern owns to aid modeler's in the selection of prototypical equipment.
Other research is captured in the General Research Section. This section also includes maps displaying the locations of all research documented on this site.
